Seattle Womens Field Hockey Club is 50 Years Old!
1953-2003
Seattle, WA June 30, 2003 We are
delighted to announce that Seattle Womens Field
Hockey Club turns 50 this year! In celebration of this
momentous occasion the Club will host a dinner for all
Pacific Northwest players, both past and present, at
the University of Washington on Saturday September 13th,
2003. The celebrations will continue with a day of field
hockey games on Sunday September 14th, 2003 there
even will be a game played by "old-timers"
using rules from the early 1960's! This event represents
a significant achievement for the Club and illustrates
the importance of field hockey in the Pacific Northwest.

Seattle Team 1968 Men
and women all over the world play field hockey, and,
since it was first introduced to the U.S. in 1901, field
hockey has become one of the most popular competitive
team sports. It is a non-contact sport with eleven players
on each team, and is similar in field strategy, scoring
and passing techniques to soccer. However, the major
difference is that a stick is the object that strikes
the
ball instead of a foot or leg. The stick has a curved
end and, unlike ice hockey, players are only allowed
to use one side (the flat side) of the stick.

The Seattle Womens Field Hockey Club was formed
by University of Washington alumni in 1953, and in its
heyday, league play occurred weekly in Ellensburg, Seattle,
Tacoma, Portland, and Eugene. Today, the Seattle Club
plays most of its games in British Columbia, Canada,
but also attends annual tournaments in the U.S. including
some in California and Georgia. The Club is even participating
in the International Golden Oldies tournament in Fiji
this year!

Our team continues to grow and thrive, and we currently
have active players ranging in age from 15 to 55. Women
who have played with the team still regard it as one
of the highlights of their lives, and the friendships
that have been formed through this Club have endured
for decades. We are therefore thrilled to be hosting
our 50th anniversary celebration this fall, and we invite
you to be a part of it too! Come help us celebrate!
