| El Capitan grad finds success in sport many consider to be girls-only |
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE July 9, 2009
By Glae Thien
“It's one of the most challenging games that I've ever played because of the amount of skill that it requires,” Manny Martinez says of field hockey. “You can be fast and strong, and you still won't be able to excel. It takes certain finesse to dribble and trap the ball.” - K.C. ALFRED / Union-Tribune
LAKESIDE — Field hockey is known mainly as a sport for females around these parts, yet Manny Martinez has discovered a world of opportunity in the game on the men's side.
Martinez, a graduate of El Capitan High, competed in the Junior World Cup in Malaysia and Singapore last month with the U.S. under-21 men's national team, only four years after he took up the sport in earnest.
With Martinez's 21st birthday in a couple of weeks, the tournament also represented his farewell to age-group play and a start toward his objective of playing on the senior national team.

| YMCA TO PROMOTE FIELD HOCKEY FOR AFTER-SCHOOL
PROGRAM |
| |
| by Ralf Heuser
Some of you may remember my name as I ran unsuccessfully for
the position of USFHA Director of Sport Development. Today,
I want to inform you about an exciting concept to grow the
sport of field hockey.
As you all know the YMCA is committed to building strong
kids, strong families, and strong communities. In view of
the recent epidemic of overweight and under-active children,
the YMCA believes that engaging as many young people as possible
in heretofore undiscovered sports activities like Field Hockey
is the best way to overcome this growing health risk. It is
also a great vehicle for teaching kids positive values and
sportmanship and helping build their self-esteem.
