MEN

Australia, Netherlands dominate
Australia launched the defense of its Athens gold medal by dominating Canada, 6-1, while the Netherlands shut out South Africa, 5-0. Other winners included Germany, Great Britain and New Zealand. Click here for full results.

Australia defeats Canada, 6-1
Australia launched its gold medal defense with a commanding 6-1 victory over Canada. Des Abbott scored a hat trick to lead the Australians; Canada managed only two shots on goal the entire game.

New Zealand rallies past South Korea
New Zealand rallied past South Korea on the strength of three goals by Hayden Shaw, 3-1.

WOMEN

USA ties second-ranked Argentina
The United States tied Argentina 2-2 in its opening match at the women's field hockey tournament Sunday. In other games, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia all won.

Japan defeats New Zealand, 2-1
Japan defeated New Zealand, 2-1, in the opening women's field hockey match at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Misaki Ozawa and Toshie Tsukui each scored once for Japan.
